What a simple SMILE will do for your day!!!

Yesterday, DH and I went on a road trip to Regina so he could turn in his passport application.  We went with a plan….

DH has COPD so his breathing and walking are unable to cooperate very much.  We planned to drive to the building, he would get out and I would go find a parking spot.  So, I drove around the block, found lots and paid $1 for 1/2 hour hoping that that would be all we would need.  I walk across the parking lot and go up to the 5th floor – he was already at the counter about to pay…..the person handing out the numbers was the FIRST SMILE of the day.  He knew immediately who I was there for and smiled. As DH was leaving the counter, he asked the guy about his tattoo – it was a large one and the guy smiled because DH has mentioned it.

We leave the building and DH reminds me we could have parked in the handicapped spot right outside the back door – he has a permit to do that.  I never remember that as I am OK with walking. Oh well, it all worked out.

We went to London Drugs as I knew they would have a new Apple mouse as ours died on the weekend.  The clerk in the computer section was so NICE and in a good mood, it was a shame we only needed the mouse.

Our next stop was Walmart.  The cart person saw DH coming and met him, we first went to the magazine aisle as the aisle in London Drugs didn’t have magazines I was looking for…..same with Walmart.  Next was the grocery aisle and people were asking us where things were – LOL!  That store is different from our regular one so we just smiled and said we were from out of town.  I found an AWESOME looking set of Bic markers (36) of them laying in an aisle that was not where they should have been – a shelf stocker happened to be going by and I asked if he was able to check the price for me, he smiled and said sure.  He checked it for me $24.96 and asked if I needed help with anything else. I told him I was good.

Went to find DH again as he just takes off – he seems to go into his own world when he’s in a grocery store….LOL  On the way, another older lady asked if I knew where the coffee aisle was, I was able to help her as we had just checked that aisle to see what the beans price was compared to the Wholesale Club in Swift Current…..she was so happy and kept thanking me for taking her right to the coffee area.

When it was time to check out – one of the aisles at the very end had a red light on, so I said let’s go there instead of the maze for the faster ones – the clerk was cleaning off the belt and was able to start checking us out right away.  She was in a good mood and smiling the whole time – looked like she liked her job!

So, the whole time we were in Regina from stopping at the Govt. building to leaving Walmart was 1.5 hours…..

Everything was perfect!

I wrote this post just to prove if YOU SMILE, people will notice and SMILE back to you!

From Madrid, Spain photos taken last June.

This photo is from the Hilton Madrid Airport hotel, the hallway on the main floor ceiling on your way to the second set of elevators.  I knew as soon as I saw this being escorted to my room, that I’d have to come back down to photograph before dark…..

I LOVE the striking black & white and all kinds of possibilities started to flood my brain.  I had to immediately go write down notes in my sketchbook that I had taken with me.

First thought was that this could be something cultural.  I made a handcarved stamp of positive and negative of the design and I have been playing around stamping in my sketchbook different designs.  The photo on the left shows one design.

My challenge for YOU, is to open your eyes to what is around you and see the design possibilities – they are everywhere.  If you don’t have your camera with you, make a quick sketch – even if its on a napkin or post-it note.  You can add it to your sketchbook later.

Using Architecture photos from Spain as Inspiration

I LOVED all the architecture in Madrid, Spain when I was there June 2011 – most of my photos from the trip were of buildings.  Very boring for some but I was in my glory.  I printed off this one  photo and started just sketching designs from it.

I kick myself for not making notes while I was on the Historical Bus Tour of Madrid so I could say what this building was (I have the pamphlet from the tour but didn’t mark where this was on the map – I was just TOO EXCITED & shooting photos all the time).

Do you see the centre circle in the lower red part of the building?  I played with that circle design. First, I wanted the outline of the circle and tried to carve it but slipped the carving tool so had to take out the arrow parts.  You can see the arrows on the other stamp.  I think I will try another without the outside circle but with the arrows.

Another design that popped out at me was the swirly work on the top of the red peak.

I never even thought of how hard the carving of this outline would be until I started it.  So, intricate that I would do alittle one day and then set aside.  The pink carving material was so easy to carve that you barely touched it with the carving tool – that is why I took my time.  I finally finished it yesterday while watching the Bronze Medal game of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts (Canadian Ladies Curling).

The photo has already produced so many designs in my sketchbook that I can hardly wait to be able to PLAY more with them.  I LOVE zooming into different area of the photo and seeing what pops out.  Even turning the photo upside down changes perspective and different designs show up.

These designs will be stamped on different fabrics for a series of artwork I am making about my Spain trip.  Will be posting them soon.

My segment on Artistically Speaking Blog Talk Radio Show

Today – Sunday Feb. 26th was about going on an Artistic Adventure to the Thrift Stores for inspiration and art supplies.  I am fortunate to have 3 very good thrift stores within 45 minutes of home and I try to visit at least once a month but more often it seems to be once every 2 months.

You can listen to the whole Episode of Artistically Speaking HERE

I never know what I’m going to find there and each time is different – sometimes an AWESOME HAUL like this one I did a VIDEO of (my very first video) or sometimes with nothing.

LOVING these forced  time slots of creating for Free ART Friday!!!

Fridays, I stream LIVE for roughly 1 hour – this time it was 36 minutes as I was DONE!  I had already sprayed this canvas board before hand and then finished this piece on the stream.  I used Derwent Inktense pencils to colour in the little scene. It will be mailed on Monday.
