Some of you who follow my blog regularly, know that Jane Williams is our daughter. It has been FABULOUS to see the progression in her paintings. We regularly get emails with a photo attached of her latest. Jane had her first exhibition last spring, you can read about it on THIS POST. She is working on a website, but for now, if you’d like to contact her, just leave a comment.

Without further ado, I’m pleased to feature JANE WILLIAMS as a Guest Artist. All images are clickable to see larger.

Tell me a little about yourself…and WHEN did you realize you are an
ARTIST?
I live in Southern Alberta and work at a very busy gas station/convenience store. Most of the time, I love my job but when the day is done, I prefer a lot of solitude.
Since I was young, drawing and sketching were something I spent a lot of time doing. As I got older and had children, I started crafting, usually leaning toward paint crafts. It wasn’t until after my family gave me art lessons and paint as a gift that I realized how much I enjoyed getting lost in what I was painting. An artist? Hmm, if that means loving the time I spend playing in paint then Yes I suppose I am. So far, I haven’t taken it too seriously but as a retirement job it would be great.

What BEST describes the work you do?
Realism describes my work so far. I want a painting to draw me in as if I was there.

How did your style evolve?
I’d have to say with every painting, I am evolving. Each painting seems to teach me something or it gives me ideas for something more. The use of colour, especially complementary colours, and hidden colours that give a
painting its depth, is amazing to me. Back to the crafting days, I loved
to layer colours. Details are becoming less important to me now, if I can use
colour to express the same thing.

Who is your favourite artist? Why?
I have always liked Monet. His paintings create feeling and energy with colour. Another favorite of mine, is Thomas Kinkade. The light and the way he uses colours draws me in every time.

Do you have a favourite art period? Why?
The Impressionists are my favorite. They were a shocking bunch at the time. I think its that little slice of rebel I still have in me. I love the way colour is used to create movement and feeling in their work.

What is your favourite art supply? Why?
I have recently changed to open acrylics. They are giving me a little more
time and freedom to blend and soften edges because they do not dry as fast
as regular acrylics.

As artists, we sometimes have challenges that we have to face. Sometimes it acceptance, or understanding or family or ??? Do you and are you able to tell us?
Only myself! Not so much in confidence, but I have a lazy streak for sure. I function better when I have deadlines.

Do you have goals – short term and/or long term?
I plan on being much more consistent with my painting practises at home. As for long term, well its one short term at a time for me, but eventually I hope to have a nice little retirement career from painting.

What else can we see from you this year? Any new projects, collaborations, plans.
Most of my paintings are on display around town right now so I will be busy filling up my house again. Possibly a switch to oils in the fall is coming too.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
Thanks for having me as a guest artist. It is easy to forget sometimes to get out there and connect with others

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
