I am an ARTIST!!!

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Thought I’d tell you how I came to be an ARTIST.

Remembering some of my younger days is hard sometimes…..I’ve blacked out alot and some is just not blog material.  I do recall always LOVING to draw or doodle.  I learnt to sew about the same time as Kindergarten (which by the way, I went to on horseback as it was only 1.5 miles down the road – awww ole Charlie was GREAT!).  Mom taught us to hand sew, then when she got her first electric sewing machine, we (sisters & I) were able to have her ole treadle – still had it until the house fire in 1973.

I recall in Grade 1, we did a mural for some or one of the stores on main street.  I then flash to Grade 7, where, in art class – I was told to not think about a career in anything art related.

I recall LOVING how I was drawing (& I’m still trying to remember how I did those girls sitting in bathing suits in Grade 7 that the mean woman didn’t like)…..same year I was given a “D” in home economics by another mean woman.

So, no surprise I dropped everything creative until I had the kids…..when I took up making clothes for Carrie and some for myself.  Once our son Michael came along, I got into more creative projects – took up pottery for a time, ceramics, macrame, needlepoint, cross-stitch, etc…..

In the fall of 1984, we were told that we would be grand-parents (my step daughter, Jane & her husband Rick).  I wanted to create a quilt for the upcoming baby.  I wanted MY grandchildren to have a quilt.  I tried to find books – few and far between back then.  I hand appliqued the images to background fabrics – it was hard to get good 100% cotton fabrics back then also.  I hand quilted and its still in one piece to this day.  Worn and faded but still together……AMAZING!

This was my starting off point and I have been quilting ever since!  I started designing my own patterns back in 1998 when I got my first copy of Electric Quilt, then burn out hit me in 2001 and I wanted to work small.  I joined the Quilt Art list online – best thing I ever did!  I started playing with Journal quilts – small art pieces without the worry of using alot of materials.  You could toss them if you didn’t like them.  I have done some tossing for sure….

Someone on the Quilt Art list talked about Altered Art, so I checked out some sites for that, that led to rubber stamping, then collage, then scrapbooking, etc.

I AM IN A HAPPY PLACE right now……I LOVE IT ALL!

When our daughter, Carrie, went to Alberta College of Art, I was living out my DREAM – through her.  She is in a very creative job now in Ontario. Both our kids are creative and I encourage it all the time!

I started calling myself an artist about 7 years ago……it took some time to get that to stick in my head.  Really, though, I have been an artist all my life and didn’t really acknowledge it because of the negative words and no encouragement. Encouragement was not part of our family until recently….

I am mostly self-taught but have taken a couple workshops here and there….mostly educated from magazines, books and the internet.  I LOVE the internet!!!

I have thought about taking distant learning Art courses via a college or university, I keep telling myself when I have enough money.  One day I will just DO IT!

I try to teach myself ONE new thing everyday.  I read about an artist (the internet is GREAT for this), study their art, try to sketch it out and work a fabric/mixed media piece.  These are just my playing pieces so will not be on my website……some are already tossed.  I learn from them, those mistakes are all learning experiences and I come up with a better piece the next time.  Grandma Moses is someone I admire – she just DID IT and no never mind what people thought.  She’s my kind of artist!!!  LOL.  I am drawn to Kadinsky, Hunterwasser and Klee but LOVE learning about all artists.  I have no favourite style….I LOVE IT ALL!

I LOVE colour – all colours….sometimes I am in an orange phase or a purple faze or turquoise.  They are ALL BEAUTIFUL!!!  I need to get braver at making pieces with COLOUR, that comfort and excite ME instead of what sells all the time.

I have taught myself all the design principles….sometimes worrying about that stresses me out, so I JUST DO IT!  It makes me happy and sometimes the pieces turn out GREAT and sometimes not.

I actually ENJOY drawing….its taken a long time to get that one teacher out of my head saying those mean things, but I get excited when I can see the progress I am making drawing everyday.  PRACTISE is what its all about!

I am enjoying watching Work of ART, the next great artist reality  show…..I know I am NOT a reality show person, but this one has shown me other artists, how they work through their challenges, and the critiques are educating.  I am keeping track of all the challenges and will be working on them for myself.

My favourite art supplies are my sewing machine, threads and fabric, but close behind is paint & paper.

I have many ideas to try in my sketchbooks.  I am challenging myself to work on NEW PIECES for the Double Vision exhibit…..I have grown since 2008 and alot of those pieces are not doing anything for me.  Some have sold, so this is the perfect time to RE-DO and then look for venues to exhibit.

I don’t think of this as a job….though on Art Business days, I do have to think that way.  Most days its PLAY for me and I like it that way!!!

Gorgeous DAY!!!

plumtree29may2009This is one of our Plum trees….its loaded with blossoms.  I heard bees yesterday, so will be interesting to see how many actual plums we’ll end up with….in a few weeks, I’ll be putting the sheers on all the fruit trees before the birds start eating the fruit – I have fruit trees for us to eat not the birds!

Supposed to be over 30 deg C today but with high winds….

Yesterday, I posted on Twitter/Facebook and on the Quiltart group this question:

Is a house really a home?

I’m going to work on a series about Homes/Houses and I questioned myself on the home part.  To me, a house is not automatically a home!

Challenge quilts…

Saturday, June 19th, 2004

While everyone is away enjoying themselves (& getting NO sleep) at the Western Retreat…..I am trying to finish up my Pink Challenge Art Quilt.

I have taken apart, added stuff and am re-quilting it now. Still have to put beads, etc. back on it and tidy up on one area…..but I think its going to be OK. I will be very happy to have it finished and posted on the Quilt Art website as part of the challenge. My first official “Art Quilt”!!

Biff (DH) was telling someone that all the packing we have left is our daily stuff so less than 24 hours then it will be done. I actually think it would take me less than that…..but won’t worry about it now until Sunday July 4th. Just over 2 weeks to go now…..the days seem to be plugging along.

Received my Bag of stuff in the “Bag Challenge” on Quilt Art list……I think I already have an idea for it, something that I had sketch last fall and everything in the bag is perfect for it. The person who filled the bag added some pretty slinky fabrics, so will have to find my stabilizers for those. Most of the fabrics are co-ordinated which works for my design and I will only add one more fabric I think…..it is sure going to be interesting to see what people come up with all 130 bags that were exchanged. I didn’t try to co-ordinate the fabrics in mine…. I just took the ziploc and started stuffing it.

In my sorting in the past few days, I’ve come across a shoebox full of goodies…..so will do a contest on the Retreat list for the ones who stayed home. Then, I can mail it off before we move.

Woke up this morning thinking it was Sunday……somehow I lost a day in my sleep. I didn’t have a nap yesterday and slept very sound, so am thinking that’s the reason.

Talked to Michael (DS) yesterday, from northern BC…. they are off for a couple of days before heading into bush camp where they’ll be staying for awhile. Sounds like he’s still enjoying it – tho its been HOT the last week and they’ve been working from 3 am to 1pm as its just too HOT after that…..and besides its daylight there at 2:30 am.

Reminds me of being up in Taloyoak (Nunavut) – it would be 24 hours of daylight right now and I found that harder to deal with than the dark hours of winter.

Talked to Carrie (DD) also yesterday. She’s been reading “Eating for your Blood Type” book lately. We will have to start eating that way and see if it helps our sinus problems, etc. I’ve really noticed the difference in how I feel the day after eating pork and potatoes for supper. She’s getting back into beading again. Mummmmmm – wonder how her bead collection looks. Will have to ask her to bring it when she comes for a visit and she can raid mine – tho it’s probably not as exciting as its mostly recycled.

We’ve enjoyed watching the CFL (Cdn. Football) games this week – opening week!! So, only a week & half since hockey was over.

Sorting & Packing

Wednesday, May 5th, 2004

Tests went OK…….they didn’t find anything which I guess is a good thing.  Doctor said he’s going to schedule a different test and see if anything shows up on that one. If not, then we’ll have to start checking  elsewhere…….knock on wood, but its been 6 weeks since the last big bout so maybe the last round (14 days worth) of antibiotics did the trick. When I feel something in my kidney or bladder, I do take tylenol, drink more water and sleep.

So…….waiting to hear when another test is scheduled!

We’ve been getting some rain around here – very unusual indeed. Wish the winds wouldn’t be here tho.

Well, the only Canadian hockey team left in the Stanley Cup playoffs are the Calgary Flames. The next round starts on Sunday!!

Creatively……patched Michael (son) jeans!! Next, he wants the pocket on his favorite coat fixed….was going to do while hockey was on tonite but….too frustrating! Will, do that this morning after breakfast and my morning pages. He meets up with the whole crew in Regina on Thursday sometime.

Been doing some more packing and sorting – found some fabrics that I hadn’t seen for awhile. Stuff that you say “Why did I buy that?!” Oh well, its good for backings on some friendship quilts……or I should try over dyeing some of it and see what turns out.

I am trying to do a few boxes a day so that when we do hear the word about moving that it won’t take too long to be ready!

This has sure gotten me to purge some stuff (DH says not enough, but he’d like to move all our worldy possessions in the van! – so he’s no help at all).

One of the gals on the Quilt Art list was talking about using small bits to make some small art pieces……well, in my sorting – I have a little pile about the size of my fist of little bits and today when I finish sewing Michael’s coat……while I have the sewing machine uncovered – I’ll fuse them to a piece of muslin and just see what comes of it all. Have some little yarn bits as well so will couch them on there somewhere….ummmm.

Vein of Gold…

Friday, March 19th, 2004

I decided to start reading “The Vein Of Gold – A Journey to Your Creative Heart” by Julia Cameron that I’ve had for awhile. The same author as Artist’s Way.

The winds are howling pretty good around here today and playing havoc with my sinuses – totally unproductive today!! And, to think that the first day of Spring is tomorrow – you sure wouldn’t know it today. Dark clouds are approaching so we will see whether they bring more snow or freezing rain!

Speaking of tomorrow – my friend Jill is getting married again – I won’t say how many times this it. I sure wish her & Derek all the best!

Now, there is a really creative person – Jill. She can paint like you wouldn’t believe and has a natural decorating talent.

Talent – well, we are suppose to all have it but we just don’t look for it or use it. Creating my journal quilts and the little ATCs I am slowly finding where my talent lies. I am having FUN that is for sure!

I was in such a rut for the past year – didn’t feel like creating much of anything. For those who know me, that was not me as I am always doing something.

In November, someone on the Quilt Art list mention Altered Books and I’ve been working on something nearly everyday and even have picked up some of the quilts that had been put aside for awhile. Someone said I was burned out…..could be but I know I did miss quilting and hope that rut never returns.
