Textural Business Cards…

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

At that AGM for Sask. Craft Council last year (2009), there was a workshop about Branding…..Here is what I got out of the workshop: To think outside the box, if our art business is textural, then why is our business cards not textural….

So off and on since, I have been working out ideas.  There have been many tossed attempts!

I like these and they use up bits I have in my stash.  Next batch, though, will have white thread used in the bobbin.

The base is an interfacing that is usually used for the top of curtains. I use one layer to add the sky fabric & the textures of the landscape and another layer sewn to the back when I do the satin stitch all around.  I, then, iron on the printing that I  used T Shirt transfer for light coloured fabrics to transfer my details for back of the card.

No two will be the same.  Spring will be something like this.  Fall will be autumn colours and so on.

I will send out 4 of them to 4 lucky winners.  If you would like to receive on, leave your comment here on my blog only and I will make a drawing on Wed. morning.

A March Monday morning….

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

March has come in like a lamb (recording this just for the record)!

2march2009We drove to Saskatoon for the day on Saturday – I had a Sk. Craft Council board meeting.  It was thankfully just cold, not snowing.  It was a long day but a good day!

The sun was bright yesterday, sure made me realize I need new blinds in my studio as it was hard on the eyes most of the time in there.  For me, it was very hard to look out the windows during the day.  I looked out the kitchen window to see this on the awningiciclesmarch12009 – some of those icicles were huge and could hurt someone if they walked on the sidewalk below the awning.  Thankfully, by supper, they were all melted off.

There is still time to enter the Newsletter Subscriber giveaway drawing.

Will be working on some handwork at bowling today, I want to have 12 postcards made for the frames that have been sitting on the dining table for ages. Made 6 of them and there they sat, so will finish off the other 6 and get them hung at the local Morse Cafe and bring home the pieces that are there.

Wednesday we will be driving to Coaldale (outside Lethbridge) for Jane’s (step-daughter) Opening Reception of her first exhibition – Natural Inspirations.  We are looking forward to seeing the paintings in real life as photos over the internet are NOT the same!!!

Review #4 – Dimensions Growth 2008

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

My 4th and final review of the Saskatchewan Craft Council‘s Dimensions Growth 2008 exhibition opening last Friday at the SCC gallery.

Rod & Denyse Simair
‘s “Eden” was an award winner – Corrine McKay Merit Award for SCC Members. I have, before Friday, only seen their work in photos……this piece is GORGEOUS! No wonder they have won numerous awards. It looks so delicate, it IS porcelain.
Another award winner - Paula Cooley‘s “Creeper”, Award of Excellence in Clay. I must admit that I’ve seen alot of Paula’s work and this is one of the BEST I’ve seen. I LOVE the texture of the piece and the hand formed edges! Even tho this is stoneware, it looks so porcelain like.
Mel Bolen‘s piece “Octopus Love” is SUPERB as well, I can only imagine how heavy it is as its stoneware. I am always amazed at the differences in his pieces….a JOY to see!
Anita Rocamora‘s “Sprout I” is another porcelain piece. Its so strong looking, LOVE the colours and the form.
Leon Lacoursiere’s “Jarrah” is a wood hand turned piece. I LOVE the way this piece looks like a clay piece…..the finish he put on it is FABULOUS.
Shelley Kaszefski‘s “Body Language” is a SUPERB soapstone carving, and the colouring is so different from soapstone carvings I’ve seen or have in my collection.
G.R. Miskolczi’s “ShowBoat” is a FANTASTIC bronze work. The details on the horse are EXCELLENT.
Mark Porcina’s untitled piece is another artwork I would have liked to touch, run my fingers over the texture. I can only imagine how he hand decorated this piece.
and the final piece……..but NOT the least!
Larry Trask’s “Weed Play” is another soapstone piece with SUPERB carving.

Overall, a FABULOUS exhibition of CRAFT by Saskatchewan artists!!! THANK YOU!

Review #3 – Dimensions Growth 2008

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

This is the 3rd (there will be one more) post about the Dimensions Growth 2008 exhibition which opened in Saskatoon at the Saskatchewan Craft Council gallery last Friday.

Megan J. Hazel
‘s “Brooch” was an award winner for Excellence in Metal. Megan’s work is SUPERB and the detail in the leaves is excellence, I enjoy visiting her website from time to time to see what’s new. I’m sad I’m unable to wear metal jewelry, will have to save for one of her pins though.
Another FABULOUS piece was Melody Armstrong‘s “Propagation”, just LOVE the curled leaves!
Its a JOY to visit her website as well.
The workmanship on Gary Greer’s “Midnite” knife is GREAT as well.
I missed talking about Don Pell’s glass piece “Spring” yesterday…..its SUPERB as well. The idea of forged steel and blown glass together is mind boggling for me. It works on this piece!
Amy Spiers‘ “Blossom” is a LOVELY sterling silver fabrication indeed. I imagine twirling it around would be a thrill to see the petals move.

Another post on Opening of Dimensions Growth 2008

Monday, December 1st, 2008

The photo shown here was at 8:40 am this morning….the colours of the sunrise were even more intense than what appears here. I think I’m going to have to do some fabric painting soon…..

My second post review about the Opening of Saskatchewan Craft Council‘s Dimensions Growth 2008 in Saskatoon, Friday evening.
“Future Species” by Michael Hosaluk was another award winner – Jane Turnball Evans Award for Innovation in Craft. I have seen some of Michael’s other work and am always amazed at the workmanship, and the details on each of his pieces. These were cocoons – made from rawhide….they are amazing!
Michael & his daughter, Laura collaborated on “Strange Growth on Platter X” – I would have LOVED to rub my fingers over the edge, its an amazing work of art.
Lee Brady’s “Forest Blind” was the winner of the Award for Excellence in Glass. I LOVED all the colours and was tempted to touch (I didn’t and also remind you I didn’t sit on the pieces on the post yesterday!).
Rose Anne Watier/Jude Marshall had some perfect looking beeswax candles that won an award for Excellence in Functional & Production Ware. I just LOVE the smell of beeswax candles (and imagine our surprise Saturday evening when the staff of SCC presented us board members with candles). They are SPECIAL!!!
Shelly Westberg’s “Willow Basket” was another award winner – Excellence in Craft by an Emerging Artist. I LOVED seeing the weaving of the willow (both myself & daughter had tried our hand at willow work) so I know the work that went into this piece, its AMAZING!
Linda Billo’s piece “Creation” was FABULOUS and I just LOVED the pattern. I don’t know the exact process of fused glass but certainly enjoy seeing the end results. Wish Linda had a website!
Cathryn Miller’s “Tower of Babel (2/5)” was I must admit at first glance a surprise. Upon closer review, I enjoyed seeing all the different techniques used and would LOVE to hear the story behind this piece.
Monique Martin’s “Dangling Carrots – Fame, Fortune, Happiness” work was a JOY to see, as I have only begun to play with lino printing, the colours were so rich.
Rowan Pantel’s “Fort a’ la Corne, Trail 2 (state II) is a FABULOUS example of lithography. I could have stood longer looking at & through this piece. I can only imagine his inspiration and wish I’d see it also.
I think I’ll have to split up the rest of works…….so two more posts to follow.
